Gabriel Traub

Gabriel Traub immigrated from Germany in 1854 and settled in Central Square as a cabinet maker. He made his first casket at a small shop in 1855 and became the local undertaker. Often, he helped families by preparing their loved ones for burial and supplied the casket, equipment, and livery for funeral services.

Louis Traub

Louis Traub, Gabriel’s son, lived in the Industrial Revolution Era. He carried on the family furniture and appliance business and organized turning the undertaking business into the funeral home business in the early 1900's. He was a founder/charter member of the Village of Central Square board in 1890. He was also involved in the organization of the Central Square Volunteer Fire Department.

Following a fire that destroyed their furniture store and home on South Main Street in 1917, they purchased Goslin's Hotel on North Main Street (the current location of the funeral home) and renovated it for their home and relocated the furniture store.

George & Lillian Traub

George Traub Sr., son of Louis Traub, served as a medic in World War I. While deployed, he was wounded in action and received a purple heart medal for his service. His wife ran the funeral business until George safely returned home. Lillian would hitch up the team in all kinds of weather and go to the family’s home to embalm and prepare the deceased for wakes and funeral services. Together, they became the first licensed undertaker and embalmers of the family.
